Girls Golf

Thursday the 14th saw the beginning of a new schools competition in N. Ireland with the inaugural playing of the Tavistock Trophy for girls at Lurgan.
Almost 90 girls played in the event and they had a nice day weatherwise to play in the event. There was also a beginners section and this was played over 9 holes.
The beginners event was dominated by the juniors of St Marys Lurgan and Maebh Mc Garry was the winner with 24 stableford points.
In the senior championship competition there was a close fought contest with 4 schools in the running from early on with the girls from the Royal School Dungannon edging out Our Ladys and St Patrick's Knock for third place. The girls from St Mary's had a good day with consistent scoring from all of their team AND THEY HAD A FANTASTIC TOTAL OF 108 POINTS which looked unbeatable. However Cambridge House had other ideas and had great returns to lead by 9 points with 1 player still to score but the final member of there team had injured herself on the golf course and and her score was not sufficient to overhaul the St Mary's score.
The girls were presented with there prizes by Mr PJ Collins ex president of GUI and the organisers were delighted that the 2011 group had agreed to a partnership scheme which ensured that the winning team got season tickets for next years irish ladies open at Killeen Castle as one of their prizes.
The girls were delighted with the day and also great thanks are due to the Ping Golf Company for all of there assistance with this event. The members of Lurgan golf club were extremely generous and welcoming and hopefully this will provide an excellent springboard for the development of girls golf in many schools across n ireland in 2011.
The girls should also be congratulated on all of there efforts to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and this money will be handed over to Darren Clarke later in the year.
Finally the school's league would like to thank the Tavistock Group and Vivienne Lewis for all of their kind help in promoting and helping schools golf in the province.
